Irish Academic Press was established in Dublin in 1974 by Frank Cass following the demise of the Irish University Press, and gradually developed into one of the leading Irish publishers of academic and scholarly writing on a wide range of subjects within the broad field of Irish Studies.
Following Mr Cass’s death in 2007, his son Stewart continued and expanded the business while remaining true to the core values of his father’s company – academic quality, integrity, scholarly research and accessible, insightful, writing. Key titles over the years, such as Reflections on the Irish State by Garrett Fitzerald and The Surnames of Ireland by Edward MacLysaght, exemplify how IAP brought to the fore many important and revealing aspects of Irish history, literature, society and current affairs.
The evolution of the Press continued in 2012 when the company was acquired by local book industry figure Conor Graham, formerly of New Island and Brookside Publishing Services, and the company moved to its current location in Co. Kildare. So began another era in its long and proud history. 2012 also saw the establishment of a general books imprint, Merrion Press, created to develop our publishing to include more popular and accessible titles distinct from the typical academic projection of the IAP format, and ultimately to provide a vehicle for the growing number of general titles published each year which appeal to a broader audience.
As the new owner of Irish Academic Press, Conor is committed to continuing the work of his predecessors and building on its strong brand, with plans to publish 30-35 new titles each year, spanning the companies traditional subject areas of modern Irish history, military history, political history, historical biographies, as well as titles in the new areas of current affairs and memoir.
We greatly welcome submissions from all authors, whatever your background or credentials, as we employ a rigorous submissions process to determine which proposals are deemed suitable for publication, and under which imprint successful submissions will be placed.
